How to fit an internal door in 8 simple steps

STEP ONE
PACKAGING REMOVAL
Step one is to simply remove all packaging surrounding your door. When carrying out numerous building works at the same time, it is important to firstly check that freshly plastered or screed parts of your property have completely dried before fitting the doors.
STEP TWO
PLACE THE DOOR IN THE FRAME
Once you have placed the door within the frame you can mark where it will require to be trimmed.
If the door is in need of a large reduction then it is best to remove equal amounts from each side in order to balance the amount you have removed; however, if the door is in need of only a slight trim it is best to trim only on the side the door hangs from.
STEP THREE
TRIMMING THE DOOR
Remove the excess from your door using a sharp plane for small amounts, or for large adjustments use a saw.
It may be worth marking along the whole height of the door how much you need to trim off in order to ensure that you get an even trim.
STEP FOUR
PREPARE FOR HINGES
Once the door is correctly trimmed to size it is time to prepare for hinges. Firstly, it is important to choose quality hinges, and we would suggest choosing hinges that use washers.
Once you have your hinges, mark on the door and frame where you plan to add the hinges.
STEP FIVE
MAKING SPACE FOR HINGES
Next you need to use a chisel to remove a space for the hinges to sit in the door frame and door.

FITTING DOOR HINGES
Once you have chiselled spaced for the hinges it is time to fix the hinges into the door and frame.
STEP SEVEN
INSTALLING DOOR HANDLES
Once the door is securely fitted, you will need to fit the door handles and latches. If you have a panelled door it is worth noting that if you use rail joints this could severely reduce the strength of the door. Firstly, fix the latch mechanism or lock mechanism to the door’s non-hanging edge. Once the mechanism has been fitted you can attach the handles into the door. You will also need to make sure there is a space for the mechanism to sit in the door frame in order to keep the door shut.

STEP EIGHT
FINAL TOUCHES
Once the door has been fitted it may be worth treating the door to stop moisture travelling through the door. If you have had to plane the edges of the door, you may have to apply varnish to the door again as well.
