Measure the width of the door
When measuring the width of a door frame, three measurements are required; the top, middle and the bottom. This is essential as the widest of the 3 measurements determines the door’s width.
The standard frame widths in the UK are 24 inches or 610mm, 27 inches or 686mm, 30 inches or 762mm, 33 inches or 838mm.
Measuring the height of the door
Two measurements are required for this, each of the vertical sides should be measured and as before, the tallest of the 3 measurements determines the door’s height.
Run the tape measure from the top corner to the bottom corner and measure height of the frame.
This job may require a step ladder or a stool to stand on to reach the entire distance and an additional person to hold the other end of the tape measure.
The standard frame height in the UK is 6’ 6” or 1981mm but some can be 2040mm.

Measure the thickness of the door
Measuring the thickness of the door is essential as depths and sizes of the door always vary.
Use the tape measure to run it across the thickness of the frame and record the results. You should also measure the rebate into the frame, where the door is completely close in the frame.
The most common frame depth in the UK is 35mm but some may also be 40mm. 45mm thick doors are typically used for fire doors.
